Beating the Bounds CC72_02365

Beating the Bounds, Longwall Street, Oxford. Boys scramble for coins at Longwall during the annual ceremony of beating the bounds, which reinforces knowledge of the parish boundary. The ceremony, which takes place on Ascension Day, is led by the parish priest, seen here up the ladder. Photographed by Henry Taunt in 1908.
